The shocking story based on true events! Koreanadoptees cross boundaries to find their cultural roots and discover much more than they ever wanted to know...

Janine Vance, author

In 1972, Korean-born twins were sent to an American couple living in the suburbs of Seattle, Washington. The twins were told that they had been found in a box on the streets of Seoul, South Korea, and they believed this tale without question. For three decades, the twins assumed the model role of typical Asian-Americans—as minorities “lucky” to be living in the great United States.

In this memoir, the Vance twins, now known as Janine and Jenette, travel to Seoul, South Korea in an effort to locate their Korean family. Once there, they discover the shocking truth about their own adoption and learn about others’. This is a tale of growth through the emotional pain of having no roots and of trying to establish a tie to one’s biological culture. It is also a shocking exposé of the adoption industry.

Longing for her roots and the truth, Janine (author, adult adoptee and Korean-American mother) demystifies the cause of discrepancies within the adoption industry—circumstances suppressed by industry profiteers. During this journey, this forward-thinking and unusual Korean-born adoptee hesitantly lets her instincts guide her as they take her into an “unknown” community—a community she calls the “unknown” culture club, whose members are transracial adoptees.

If you are an adoptive parent or if you are looking to adopt be sure to check out the archive of worldwide adoption newspaper articles. Make sure the adoption agency proves their integrity by requesting the death certificates of the children's parents before you pay the agency fees. It is very common for agencies to tag and label children "orphans" even though the parents are very much alive. Check out the Archive for newspaper articles from around the world for more information.

Be sure to read the Saints or Sinners Series posted on the left side. It's very important that all adoptees know how international adoption actually started. We deserve to know the truth.

The Search for Mother Missing is a great example of the complexity international adoptees learn to live through with all its many obstacles and challenges, sorting through meager truths, half truths and lies. It is always amazing to me how resilient so many of us are to end up with such a positive outlook on life. Janine has done a wonderful job in presenting so many facets of the adoptee world and allowing the reader a certain closeness so we may vicariously experience her journey through her eyes.

The book is a must read for all who are in some way connected to adoption and especially for those of us who have the desire to search for our own blood relatives.
